Best Fish Finders

Over the past year, dozens of new fish finders have been introduced. For this reason, we decided to write an article that could help you find the model that best suits your needs.

Each GPS sounder is different from the others, so not all of them may be suitable for the use you intend to make of them. Even early years fishers know that each fish has its own needs, a favorite food, a certain depth, water temperature, etc.

How to Choose a Fish Finder

There are many factors to consider before purchasing a fish finder. Following these steps, we will provide the information to find your most suitable model.

Frequencies

When looking for a fish finder, the frequency range is essential in determining your needs’ ideal product. There are three types of frequencies, double, single, and multiple. They are 50, 83, 192, or 200 kHz.

Higher frequencies, such as 192 or 200, are ideal for shallow-water fishing. Lower frequencies, such as 50 or 83, are perfect for fishing in deeper waters. To find the ideal model, you must know where you intend to fish most. One thing is important to remember: the higher the frequency, the more details you’ll see on the screen.

The Power

This item refers to the type of fish finder power supply. The higher this value, the faster the response time. If the wattage is high, you will see deeper into the water. Fishing in shallow water requires less wattage.

When combining frequency range and wattage, you can clearly see what appears below the surface. A good way to measure this is to remember that at every 50 kHz and 100 watts of power, you can read up to 400 feet deep (approx.). So when using a frequency of 240 kHz at 100 watts of power, it can read up to 100 feet.

The Screen

There are two essential elements to take into consideration, and they are:

Resolution: You must have a high resolution, like a TV and computer screen, to see better. A good depth sounder has a minimum resolution of 240 x 160 pixels. If this shouldn’t enough for your needs, you can always opt for a higher resolution.

Cleverly combining screen resolution and size gives you a clear picture of the seabed. To buy the best fish finder on the market, you should always opt for the best product you can afford. A pro should have a better screen than an amateur.

Screen Colors: The old black and white screens are becoming obsolete. Those who do not have too high demands can opt for these old models, allowing you to save a lot of money. However, depending on your budget, you may have to do with these appliances or have one like that to use as a backup.

The new standard is represented by color screens, which are much more reliable than their black-and-white counterparts. They are easier to read in the sunlight and make it easier to see everything around you. If you can buy a color screen, it is generally better than a black-and-white screen.

Transducers and other Considerations

The transducer is that component that allows the sight to find the fish. They emit and receive sonar waves, which let you know if fish or other objects are nearby. When it receives the data, it sends it to the main unit and screen. The viewfinder becomes a useless screen without a transducer, displaying no data.

Although every marine cartographic GPS has a transducer, you can invest your money in a better transducer than the ” basic ” one. The better ones can receive data faster, read a larger area, and perform better than those in most standard packages.

With a good transducer, you can start fishing immediately, but it is always better to have the product that best suits your needs. Finally, the transducer’s material, the cone’s angle, and your sonar’s radius.

Advantages of the Sounder

There are many benefits of using a good GPS sounder. They work at any depth, provide useful information for catching fish, and aid area mapping if you are thinking of hitting a new area for the first time, like a lake. For example, using a depth sounder can help you enormously.

You can find the perfect path to find fish and spend less time wondering where they are. All the information displayed on the depth sounder allows you to focus on the area instead of desperately floating on the water searching for fish. Locators make fishing easier and more fun. You notice the difference from the past when you have the model that best suits your needs.

Even if you have been fishing in the same place for 20 years, with a lot of luck, knowing what’s under the water with a portable fish finder is always very useful.

Not only will it be possible to catch more fish, but it will also be possible to avoid dangerous reefs in shallower waters. In addition, the depth sounder improves the safety of the fisherman—a useful device for any fishing.

How to use the Sounder

Once you have chosen the ideal product, you may wonder how to use it correctly. This step-by-step guide will help you speed up assembly and have your viewfinder ready in minutes.

Check the manual: To understand how your fish finder works, you must read the manual. It is the best place to go and start programming the product. Even if you don’t like reading all of this technical information, you must familiarize yourself with the product.

Assembly: Now, you need to install the fish finder in the best spot on the boat. Various media on the market can use for this purpose. You can mount it aft, bow, or with a portable stand on the boat. Choose the support according to the boat and the appliance’s location.

Setting: Now, you need to turn on the portable fish finder. Generally, these devices are supplied already programmed. But switching to manual settings and customizing the viewfinder will always be possible. You can leave it in automatic mode when you start it for the first time. This way, you will familiarize yourself with the device without too many headaches.

Adjustment: The first adjustment you can play with is sensitivity. This adjusts the power of the sounder, allowing you to get more detail on the screen. On the other hand, the image quality is lower when the power is low. You can play around with this setting until you find the right balance.

Setting the ID: When the GPS sounder is in automatic mode, it automatically identifies the fish. It is ideal for those who wish to test the product’s goodness, but it is a function that can also deactivate.

Automatic depth: If you’ve never seen a sonar, you can keep the depth automatic. Automatically tracks the bottom, making it easier to view depth. As you gain more experience, you can switch to manual depth adjustment. It is helpful to adjust when you know the fish you want to catch.

Depth slider: The depth slider is a line crossing the entire screen. This line lets you know the fish’s depth, making it easier to place the bait. In addition, this moves up and down the screen, making it easier to locate fish.

Suppression setting: This setting is perfect for blocking background noise during stops. It is usually automatic if the transducer is installed correctly, but you can manually change it to suit your needs. Keeping it on all the time is useless, as it can block the sonar.
